ORIGINAL RHYTHM SECTION ALLEN AND BURNHAM DEPART

The original and best-loved line-up of famed post-punk icons Gang of Four reunited in 2005 to great acclaim and success, unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham are moving on, although singer Jon King and guitar-player Andy Gill will continue, focusing on writing and recording new music as Gang of Four. Burnham last performed with the band at All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK in December 2006, while Allen played a few shows alongside a session drummer in 2007, and recently worked on new material with King and Gill.

name this tune - "out on the street" / "waiting for you"

There's a song I heard in a club recently, and I'm wondering if any of you can identify it...

It was synthy, around 130 bpm, and had a male vocal.

Some of the lyrics were:
"not staying in"... "out on the street"... "waiting for you"... "searching for you"

Discopunk this Friday 11/16 in SF, at Heat

Some of you might remember Vanguard, the dicopunk club Tim (DJ Donimo) and I did in 2003-4, that combined New York no wave from the early '80's, and the new music it inspired.

This Friday 11/16, at Heat, in SF at the Stud, we have an early '80's NYC theme, and we'll be able to bring some of that music back. Come by and help my partner Tim (aka DJ Donimo) celebrate his birthday.

Check out the press we've been getting for Heat:

http://www.sfbg.com/blogs/music/2007/11/zombie_warhol_rises_glam.html
and
http://sfscene.blogspot.com/2007/10/event-review-heat-at-stud.html

Here's the blurb on Heat:

For the next Heat, this Friday, November 16, Warhol's Factory enters the '80s. In the early '80's New York was the epicenter for visual arts, performance art, fashion, and dance music. Keith Haring and Klaus Nomi were at the East Village's Club 57. ESG, Liquid, Liquid, Arthur Baker, Larry Levan, and New Order were at the Paradise Garage. Warhol, Halston, and Grace Jones were at Studio 54.

The next Heat features art, music, and personalities from or inspired by New York in the early '80's. Plus DJ Donimo and DJ6 spinning the latest indie electro remixes. Hosted by Artemis Chase. Special appearances by BeBe Sweetbriar as Donna Summer and Mercedez Munro as Grace Jones. Art by Twig. Graffiti art by Matthew Bajda. Visual projections and installations by Ben. Hot go go dancers.

And it's DJ Donimo's birthday bash!

3rd Fridays at the Stud
399 9th St, SF

Just came across a 'band' this tribe might like...

Their bio says "New Young Pony Club are Andy, Igor, Laura & Ty - a 2 boy / 2 girl electronic pop riot squad, in love with Chic guitars, Stranglers bass, Soft Cell synths and Blondie vocals."

'The Get Go' appears to be their stronger track. Anyone else no more about them?

And for one reason or another they don't want to go. or say they will then when the time to buy the tickets comes they flake out on me cause and i quote " I'm not paying $300 to see a bunch of bands i have never heard of.

And true there are a lot of bands i have never heard or never even heard of, but thats why im going. and thats what Napster is for so you have i idea of whats going to come out of some ones mouth when they start playing becuase you cant tell by the band names what they're going to sound like anymore. when i first hear the name Queens of the Stone Age im thinkingcool a heavy metal chick band, or Tokyo Police Club i had no idea what to expect or Dead Puppies and who names there band that anyway thay sound good but iwa expecting some hard core goth electro-death metal shit.

But whats in a name really just some letters maybe a number or two if its a punk bandbut i digress

I mean broaden your horizons why don't you. If you don't give something a chance becuase it doesn't fit in your known world you miss out on a lot. but to my real piont.

If anyone is going and knows of any artist i should look out for or give me a heads up on something i might want to know before im stuck in the desert for 3 days send me a message.

i was on the message boards for Coachella and heard some stories that surprised me. I mean weed and shrooms are one thing, but who does cociane at a music festival (besides the bands), that just seems a lillte to much for me. maybe the guy was fucking with me but i have no reason to not believe him so give me a reason not to believe him. It not that im fearful its just at this piont i don't know what to expcet beyond the obvious.

These are the acts that i deffinetly want to see:
http://coachella.com/scheduler/scheduler.php?show_token=113b35134696a93efdda5543e994c0c9

other than that i will be wondering around aimlessly probably higher than the hubble telescope. just kidding Isaac?

New Rave

I posted this in the Shadowplay tribe, because we've been playing new rave at Shadowplay for some time now. Here's the NY Times on the phenomenon in Britain-- with references to (Shadowplay and Discopunk tribe favorites) New Young Pony Club and the Klaxons.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/21/fashion/21Rave.html

January 21, 2007
Hope You Saved Your Glow Stick
By SAM KNIGHT
LONDON

TO most people in Britain, rave is a memory, and a blurry one at that. For four years at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, Britain’s youth took to the fields, forests and warehouses, took Ecstasy, wore some of the silliest outfits ever devised — like cricket hats, white gloves and gas masks — and ushered out Thatcherism in a strobe-lighted haze of electronic music that shook the ground they danced on.

Then Parliament passed the Criminal Justice Act of 1994, which humorlessly characterized rave music as “the emission of a succession of repetitive beats,” and gave police the power to shut raves down. That swiftly put an end to the scene’s drug-induced violence — and to the scene itself.

But if you happen to be in London these days, there are signs that something like rave is stirring again.

“The first time around, rave really seeped into the mainstream,” said Carri Mundane, 26, a designer who was a child during the first rave scene but kept the fliers amassed by her older brother. “The music was in the charts, and everything just became a little bit more psychedelic.”

This time, it’s more insular. And it’s different in other ways, too: some of the music is rock, not electronica, and the scene is no longer as defined by the twin illegalities of drugs and trespassing.

But a collection of young creative types are dressing up and making music that unmistakably refers back to the garishness, the euphoria and the escapism of 15 years ago.

In mid-December, the Klaxons — an indie rock band and the self-appointed leaders of the scene — invited a pack of D.J.’s, artists and other performers to play a final gig of the year under the railway arches of London Bridge.

The location was the site of illegal parties in the early 1990s but, in keeping with the more sanitized character of today’s movement, is now a well-appointed nightclub with a bouncer, sofas to lounge on and $7 beers.

The music didn’t sound like rave. Though tinged with electronica, the Klaxons and two other bands played stripped-back rock, not unlike much of the music that has been in vogue in Britain the last few years. And the dance floor was more of a punkish mosh pit, with lots of shoving revelers, than a blissed-out, synchronized community of dancers.

Still, there were glow sticks — a kind of waving coral reef of neon pinks, yellow and greens — and between acts, young men in leather jackets nudged their way around the dance floor, offering Ecstasy. Teenage fans wore reflective jackets, neon paint, sunglasses, beads and whistles as they hurled themselves back and forth, up and down, suggesting that if this wasn’t rave, then it was certainly a somehow-related cousin.

Like the original, the new rave scene may be a refuge from reality. Although neither incarnation of rave would claim anything as coherent as an ideology, there may be an echo of Margaret Thatcher’s frustrated youth among those experiencing the last days of Tony Blair’s Britain, said Tahita Bulmer, the lead singer of the band New Young Pony Club.

“That spirit of contentment has faded,” she said, with the country vehemently opposed to the way the prime minister has handled the war in Iraq. But it’s when people are unhappy, she added, that “everything goes neon and gets exciting.”

Ms. Mundane, the designer, who wears brightly colored clothing that has made her an arbiter of rave fashion, said, “What I like about rave is the positivity of it, the fact that it is so utopian.”

The rave renaissance may be a reaction to the country’s dour political state or to the tyranny of indie rock. “There’s only so much partying you can do to these shoe-gazing indie bands,” said Jaimie Hodgson, a music journalist, referring to Britain’s emo-heavy music scene.

Many participants say they are nostalgic for a movement they are old enough to at least remember, even if they have not experienced it themselves. Or perhaps they’re just looking for an excuse to dress up and take Ecstasy, otherwise known as MDMA, a drug best known for inducing a touchy-feely, sensation-inducing high.

The new rave scene is a small, tightly connected movement of artists, D.J.’s, bands and partygoers forged in a series of warehouse parties that, beginning in 2003, were organized by a gang of artists called the Wowow Boys, in New Cross, a ragtag neighborhood of students and boarded-up buildings southeast of London Bridge.

As in the 1990s, the gatherings attracted newly formed bands that were eager to create an environment “where the specific aim was to party, “ said Jamie Reynolds, the bass player of the Klaxons.

Hence, the outrageous outfits: At a New Young Pony Club gig, Oisin Butler, a psychology student who said he was starting a band called Aids Baby, sat wearing a purple bow tie, a red cardigan and glasses with Day-Glo frames and no lenses. His jeans were so tight there was no room for his keys. “You can wear anything, as long as it’s odd, or glittery, or neon, or is really disgusting,” he said.

At a popular monthly dance party in Islington, North London, people are encouraged to download smiley masks — a throwback to the original rave scene and an Ecstasy reference — from a Web site. The event started in 2003 with a party in an abandoned public bathroom; this summer 3,000 people in fluorescent attended its Glade Festival.

The dance-music scene has been “snowballing” for the last three years, says the party’s D.J. and promoter, who calls himself Saint Acid. He added that his early events were mainly attended by people in their 30s, wearing old clothes and looking to relive the dance parties of their youth, but now the crowd is “getting younger and younger.”

Mark Archer is half of Altern8, a riotous dance act last seen playing the violin in biological warfare suits in 1991. After 15 years of relative quiet, Mr. Archer, now 38, played at the recent Islington party and is enjoying the unlikely satisfaction of seeing a young band, Trash Fashion, cover one of Altern8’s old tracks.

“If someone had told me 16 years ago that I would still be playing now the same music I was then, and that rock bands would be covering our songs, I would have laughed,” he said. “All of a sudden rave has become cool again. It’s been a bit of a shock.”
Slits touring

Slits playing in SF, two days before my b-day

Info from cmj.com:

The (New) Slits New EP, Tour
Jul 14, 2006
Story by: Jen Holup

The Pixies may have recently declared themselves officially barren, but luckily the Slits are ready to birth new material. The Revenge Of The Killer Slits EP, out October 17 through SAF Records, will mark the band's first material since 1981's Return Of The Giant Slits. Pioneers of genre-stepping punk rock, riot grrrl and inspiration for female rockers far and wide, original members Ari Up and Tessa Pollitt join a laundry list of fellow punk rock royalty who guest on the record. Sex Pistols dummer Paul Cook, Adam And The Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni and the daughter of the Clash's Mick Jones all lend a hand in lieu of a drummer and original guitarist Viv Albertine. Pollitt's even making it a family affair this time around—her daughter Phoebe contributes backup vocals to "Slits Tradition".

The Slits kicked off their tour this spring at clubs and bars in the UK, and have already confirmed a number of US dates.

Tracklist For Revenge Of The Killer Slits:
01. Slits Tradition
02. Number One Enemy
03. Kill Them With Love

Slits Tour Dates:
10/25 - Philadelphia, PA - TBA
10/26 - Annandale-On-Hudson, NY - SMOG @ Bard College
Floetry - Gettin' Late
Junior Senior - Shake Your Coconuts
Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Mariah Carey - Heartbreak
Metro Area - Orange Alert
Radio 4 - Dance to the Underground
The Rapture - Sister Saviour
Unkle - In a State

I've left out all the LCD Soundsystem, Black Dice, etc from their label... their production work, in other words... and I know there's a new N.E.R.D. remix out there, but I haven't found it yet...

Anything else?

Has anyone seen a show on the tour yet? I've heard good thing from some people. They're here in Chicago tonight and I plan on going (if it doesn't sell out). Unfortunately, Juan MacLean won't be there tonight so it's just Murphy, Sweeney and Shit Robot.

OG discopunkers The Rapture are back. Here's the video for "Get Myself Into It":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFACpd4ow64&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fthis%2Ebigstereo%2Enet%2F

The brief shot of the blonde in red with the ice cream cone is a reference to a Jessica Simpson video:

(Not recommending you watch the Jessica Simpson video, though. That's 4 minutes of my life I'll never get back.)

Say It Ain't So, Dad! Out Hud Break Up

For my money, they were the best of the bunch! From Pitchfork --

Out Hud Break Up

Looks like it was indeed one life to leave for electro-punks Out Hud, who have called it quits. The confirmation of the band's dissolution comes after months of speculation and rumors. Today, band member Molly Schnick made the following terse statement: "Yes we did break up. We figured everyone already knew. There are clues about it all over the last record. Solo records to follow..."

Well, now everybody does know.

The spirit of Out Hud lives on in sibling band !!!, featuring members Nic Offer, Tyler Pope, and Justin Vandervolgen. They are currently on tour in Europe and finishing up their third album.

Dance outdoors to discopunk at SF Pride Festival Sunday 6/25

You only have one chance a year to dance outdoors to discopunk on the streets of San Francisco (at least until we can get a float at the Love Parade). It's coming up this Sunday-- the Shadowplay Stage at the SF Pride Festival. Dance to your favorite discopunk remixes by MSTRKRFT, the DFA, Phones, Whitey, Mylo, Headman, Linus Loves, etc, etc all afternoon, on Hyde St, just off Market St, on Sunday, June 25, 2006, noon-6:30pm.

This year we are featuring, all the way from Sweden, the glam rock band The Ark.

The Shadowplay Stage is Pride’s indie dance oasis. DJ Donimo and guests spin the latest indie, electro, and discopunk remixes, plus alternative classics ranging from ‘70’s glam and punk, to ‘80’s new wave, no wave, and post-punk, to ‘90’s riot grrrl. It’s the place at Pride for indie boys and grrrls, punks, goths, mods and rockers, prisoners of the ‘80’s, and other music fanatics.

Shadowplay Stage schedule:
Noon - 1:00pm --Femme Fury (Catfight)
1:00 - 2:00 pm – Skip (New Wave City)
2:00 - 3:00 pm -- Rchrd Oh?! (Hold Yr Horses)
3:00 - 3:30 pm – Donimo (Shadowplay)
3:30 – 4:30 pm --The Ark (live performance)
4:30 - 6:30 pm – Donimo and Dan (Shadowplay)

Read more about The Ark here:
http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/ark-060327.shtml
Or watch a music video of their gay pride song, "Father of a Son":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntUpkgL2RBc

This will be a great party, and is free. (There is a voluntary donation to charity at the festival entrance.) All ages.

See http://shadowplaysf.com for details.

The next Shadowplay at the Stud is Friday, July 7. Sign up for the guestlist at http://shadowplaysf.com/list.html and get in free (until 11:30pm).

ages ago (1993) I tried to convice some friends that some wierd amalgam of disco and punk was a good idea - I was laughed at (repeated, except by a friend who was a drummer) .. then I found the Jah Wobble - legend lives on disc with Betrayal on it... and some people though "hmmm not so bad of an idea" .... Does any one know anything similar to this old Jah Wobble stuff -- really almost Punk Dub ,, that exists???? (obviously PIL, besides that) THANKS!!!! Duane

Interesting Cabaret Voltaire trivia.

I was reading the Wikipedia entry on CV and came across this amazing bit of trivia:
--------------
The audio samples from Don't Argue come from a 1945 post war American Propaganda film called Your Job in Germany directed by Frank Capra and scripted by Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss.

"Don't clasp that hand, It is not the type of hand, That you would care to clasp in friendship"
-------

I'm probably dating myself - but it was cool to finally learn the source of that amazing sample. Add in the genius of the Rev Gene Scott samples on their other records and... damn!

I Must Be Emo!

http://emosong.ytmnd.com/

Dear diary,
mood: apathetic
my life is spiraling downward.
i couldn't get enough money to go to the Blood Red Romance
and Suffocate Me Dry Concert.
It sucks cause they play some of my favorite songs like
'Stab My Heart Because I Love You,' and 'Rip Apart My Soul,'
and of course, 'Stabby Rip Stab Stab.'
and it doesn't help that i couldn't get my hair to
do that flippy thing either, like that guy from that band could do,
some days you know. . .

i'm an emo kid, non-conforming as can be
you'd be non-conforming to if u look just like me
i have paint on my nails and make-up on my face
i'm almost emo enough to start shaving my legs
'cause i feel real deep when i'm dressing in drag
i call it freedom of expression most just call me a f*g
'cause their dudes look like chicks, their chicks look like d*kes
'cause emo is one step below transvestite

stop my breathing and slit my throat
i must be emo
i don't jump around when i go to shows
i must be emo

i'm dark and sensitive with low self-esteem
the way i dress makes everyday feel like Hallowe'en
i have no real problems but i like to make believe
i stole my sister's mascara now i'm grounded for a week
sulking and writing poetry are my hobbies
i can't get through a Hawthorne Heights album without sobbing
girls keep breaking up with me, it' never any fun
they say they already have a p*ssy, they don't need another one

stop my breathing and slit my throat
i must be emo
i don't jump around when i go to shows
i must be emo
dye in my hair and polish on my toes
i must be emo
i play guitar and write suicide notes
i must be emo

my life is just a black abyss, you know, it's so dark.
and it's suffocating me. grabbing ahold of me and tightening it's grip,
tighter than a pair of my little sister's jeans . . .
which look great on my by the way

when i get depressed i cut my wrists in every direction
hearing songs about getting dumped give me an erection
i write in a live journal and wear thick rimmed glasses
i told my friends i bleed black and cry during classes
i'm just a bad, cheap imitation of goth
you can read me "Catcher in the Rye," and watch me jack off
i wear skin tight clothes while hating my life
if i said i like girls i'd only be half right

i look like i'm dead and dress like a homo
i must be emo
screw XBOX i play old school Nintendo
i must be emo
i like to whine and hate my parentals
i must be emo
me and my friends all look like clones
i must be emo

my parents just don't get me you know.
they think i'm gay just because they saw me kiss a guy.
well, a couple of guys. but i mean, it's the 2000s.
can't 2, or 4 dudes make-out with each other without being gay?
i mean, chicks dig that kind of thing anyways.
i don't know diary, sometimes i think you're the only one that gets me,
you're my best friend. . . . i feel like tacos

So I correctly predicted the music they would play on tonight's party scene on "The OC": "E Talking" by Soulwax. (There was a subplot about who supplied the E.) They also played Bloc Party during the same party scene.

For last week's party scene, they played, "Daft Punk is Playing at My House."

I'm losing my edge....

Shadowplay, the omnisexual indie/electro/new wave/discopunk club, is
back Friday, April 7 with a record release party for Swedish glam band
The Ark. The Ark are fronted by the hot Ola Salo, whose live performances
have been compared to Hedwig. They are releasing "The State of the
Ark," featuring "Clamour for Glamour" and "This Poetry is Meant to Do
Harm." We've got lots of give-aways to mark the occasion. Plus we have the
latest indie/electro remixes and new wave faves spun by DJ Donimo, and
our glamorous guest DJs Rchrd Oh?! (http://this.bigstereo.net, Hold Yr
Horses) and Femme Fury (Shadowplay's "Cherry Bomb" nights, Catfight, and
86'd). All in all, it will be a night to remember (if you remember
anything at all, with the Stud's notoriously strong drinks).

Shadowplay: First and Third Fridays at the Stud
399 9th St at Harrison St.
10pm-3am. $5 after 10:30pm; free before 10:30pm

Slits news from Pitchfork

The Slits Reunite!

Mairead Case reports:
Stop Youtube-ing "Typical Girls" and start combing Expedia, because the Slits have reunited! Legendary punks and riot grrrl fairy godmothers Ari Up, Viv Albertine, and Tessa Pollitt have scheduled two shows for early May, one in Dublin and the other in Berlin.

If drool has yet to hit your keyboard, do some homework: the Slits formed in 1976. By 1977 they were on the White Riot Tour, opening for the Buzzcocks and the Clash. Sure beats your gig at the roller rink.

In 1979, they released Cut, one of the greatest punk albums ever made. No, fuck that--one of the greatest albums ever made, period.

On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood (Depeche Mode, the Fall, Nine Inch Nails) will mix the shows live, and he's on board to produce a new Slits album, tentatively due in the fall.

Swim if you have to:

05-03 Dublin, Ireland - The Crawdaddy
05-04 Berlin, Germany - Festsaal Kreuzberg

Arctic Monkeys (OK, indie, not discopunk)

OK, I'm the moderator of this tribe, and I'm posting an indie track that is not quite discopunk (at least until the remixes are released).

But they've been the recipients of great buzz, as the next big British indie band. I've heard several of their songs, and the one I like most so far, "Fake Tales of San Francisco," also name-checks my home town of SF. And you can download it now on an mp3 blog, so I thought I would post the link.

Here's the link for the mp3:
http://thecameraaspen.blogspot.com/2005/10/arctic-monkeys.html

They will be at Spaceland in LA, and at Popscene, in SF, next month.

what tracks are in your deck that make you want to take off your clothes?

I've got a bunch of ideas, and could could get the place hot, but I want insurance. I want help from you cats- the connoisseurs

I'll fold my hands and await the collective response.

Not sure if any of you guys have had the opportunity to witness any Black Leotard Front live performances but well worth the effort. Apparently, they have a new single "Hey Coach! (I Read Your Diary)" which is being edited for either a full-length or an EP due out in Spring 06.

Here is an excellent new Naum Gabo remix, of Hot Chip's "Over and Over."

The Delta 5 and Die Monitr Batsss

A couple interesting releases this month on Kill Rock Stars:

The Delta 5 (from the late '70's-early '80's) are finally being re-released January 24 on Kill Rock Stars:
http://www.killrockstars.com/bands/factsheets/delta5/

The influence of the Delta 5 in music today is not hard to find-- Tim often will play "Ice Cream" by New Young Pony Club after playing the Delta 5's "Mind Your Own Business."

More no wave (love the no wave sax in the background), but with a bit of Delta 5-ish vocals is "Clean Up," by Die Monitr Batsss, just released on Kill Rock stars as a split 7" with Les George Leningrad:
http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=304400LHD3EUJ1KBKCY9YV2PQ6
I'm a bit addicted to this track.

You can make your record collection just a little bit cooler by buying the split 7" (with "Monster Klaw" by the fabulous Les Georges Leningrad) here:
http://www.buyolympia.com/killrockstars/Item=GER037

From the KRS website:

"DIY disco is the new hip-hop as skinny kids from coast to coast make a ruckus and paste a beat onto it. At the forefront of this spiny groove revolution is Die Monitr Batss, a Portland-based three-piece featuring Nathan from the Gossip on guitars and vocals. These worker bees bring us sweet, noisy nectar straight from the dancing queen bee."
http://shadowplaysf.com

There were many other tracks that could have made it onto this list. All on the list were released in 2005; a few are 2005 remixes of tracks initially released in 2004. Number 12, "Tribulations" by LCD Soundsystem, has been played at our clubs regularly since it was leaked in 2003, but was officially released in a slightly different form in 2005.

Favorite tracks of 2005?

What were your favorite tracks of 2005, that might-- at least loosely-- fit under the category of discopunk?

I'll refrain from posting my favorites just yet, because we're doing a countdown at the Jan. 6 Shadowplay of the Shadowplay top ten. Folks can post their choices for the Shadowplay Top Ten in the Shadowplay tribe here:
http://shadowplay.tribe.net/thread/1edc6847-f0e8-4aaa-ace1-a6783cb32760
and win prizes for the list closest to ours. But I thought I'd ask the broader Discopunk tribe what your favorites of 2005 were.
